This is very good. The commentator makes an error though. He says that 'The People's Voice' ceased publication in 1966 but I was reading copies that came out in 1969 and 1970. It was actually informative. An antidote to the generally bland right wing propaganda that prevailed in those days (and still exists in the Herald and other newspapers) but we also discussed the sometimes over-rhetorical writing. But it was good stuff overall.
ReplyDeleteI don't think many of the 'committed' in those days paid much attention to the other news sources. There were books though such as 'Rape of Vietnam' by Harold Slingsby, and Agnes Smedley's great books. And a lot of books from the US and other places on politics, sociology, art, literature and other subjects.
The Progressive Book Shop was then in Derby Sreet in the city: they held a good range of political and other books. It was a kind of meeting place also.
