The Stolen Island
Bridget Williams Books is launching my The Stolen Island: Searching for 'Ata on the 24th of next month at Auckland's central library.
The Stolen Island tells the story of the slave raid that devastated Tonga's 'Ata Island in the nineteenth century, and discusses New Zealand's part in the Pacific slave trade of the nineteenth century and the meaning of that history today.
The Tongan chief Masalu Halahala shared stories about his 'Atan ancestors with me when I was writing the book, and I'm delighted that he'll be coming down for the launch.
I've set up an Events page for the launch here. The book is part of the BWB Texts series, and can be ordered from the Bridget Williams website. Auckland libraries have an advertisement for the launch here.
Jean-Paul Geindre, who is apparently sailing around the world, has posted some remarkable photographs of the coastline of 'Ata to Panoramio.
