'Ata on Radio New Zealand

This morning I discussed the Pacific slave trade, the fateful raid by slavers on 'Ata, and my book The Stolen Island with Radio New Zealand's Wallace Chapman. I'm grateful to Wallace for his enthusiasm, and for the half hour he gave me. You can listen to our talanoa here.

Kia ora Hamutana.

I would very much like to obtain/attain a copy of The Stolen Island...wrote to Scoop Review of Books to get their available-for-review copy, eh - but was beaten by a swifter peer.

What is the best way to do so, please?

Congratulations, of course, on this book too.

NB. Twelve Heavens is into its second edition already, eh...

Malo e lelei Vaughan,

you can fakatau the tohi si'i from the Bridget Williams Books website, or from (in Auckland) Unity Books, TimeOut, the Women's Bookshop, UBS, and - to quote BWB manager Tom Rennie - 'the better Whitcoulls and Paper Plus stores'. Might be tricky in Morrinsville though eh!

Great news about Twelve Heavens! With Filipinos becoming an important part of the Auckland community - according to Paul Spoonley's data they're the fastest growing ethnic group here - the book is well-timed...

'Ofa atu,
Sikoti

Kia ora mo tenei e hoa. I will send for one via the website as we are just about to go back home to Hong Kong SAR & Philippines.

Twelve Heavens, of course, is the tri-lingual collection of poems ki nga reo Maori, Paniora & Ingarahi...so I think you may be a little confused...it is being reprinted due to Whare Wananga buy-in and buy-up.

All the best, as ever.

Hi Scott,

I listened to great interest to the talk on RNZ. It is an incredible story indeed.
I am wondering if it would be possible to talk to you about the possibility of making a documentary that tells the historical story and also follows up the mystery of what happened to the remaining folk that were transported back to Peru after the Cocos islands. I am a filmmaker from the Uk that has ended up here in Aoteoroa and have worked on a number of historical docs over the years. I also am half Spanish and fluent and have also filmed in Peru and elsewhere in south and central America which could come in useful.
my website is www.philstebbing.com

Thanks for reading and all the best

Phil
