Golden Boot and Golden Toilet Brush
Here's a press release from the Service and Food Workers Union. Personally I'm not worried who wins the Golden Boot award, as long as England don't win the Cup! (I would say 'England and the US', but the Czechs put Bruce Arena's bunch of blowhards in their place a couple of nights ago...)
Will Golden Toilet Brush Award compete with World Cup's Golden Boot Award?
Across New Zealand and Australia cleaners and supporters will be marching this Thursday 15th June as part of the growing Clean Start: Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign.
"This week we intend to name those owners who condone poor treatment for cleaners and insufficient time to clean properly," John Ryall, SFWU Cleaners Union National Secretary said today.
"To accompany the World Cup's prestigious Golden Boot Award for most goals scored the Clean Start: Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign will be awarding our own prestigious award - the Golden Toilet Brush Award."
" The award will go to the building owner that has shown the least commitment to working with cleaners to help lift cleaning standards in their buildings," John Ryall said.
The Clean Start: Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign was launched in April when nearly 2000 cleaners from across Australia and New Zealand came out in support for the campaign - since then the support among religious, ethnic and other community leaders for this campaign has grown sharply.
International Justice for Cleaners Day (June 15th) is set aside each year to bring attention to the conditions cleaners face across the globe.
In Australia and New Zealand cleaners already earn below poverty wages. Cleaners around both countries are coming together to put a stop to ridiculous work rates that prevent them from doing their work properly and pay rates that keep them trapped in a cycle of poverty.
What: Thursday, 15th June 2006 is International Cleaners Day. Come along and help cleaners commemorate the day and to find out who will win the Golden Toilet Brush Award!
