The Landfall reviewer is a poet. Fiction and fact are the same as long as they sound good. He would not recognise fake history if he read it. The big issue with The Stolen Island is that people believe its real. Its fake history invented by Hamilton pretending to be history from serious researh while he puffs himself off. This is all about him, not about the people of Tonga.
A good review by Michael O'Leary Scott. I met him a couple of times about 1990. He was alright, anon has got him or herself into a right tizzy. Is it the woman who is the embittered personage heretofore referred to?
I think a writer can involve him or herself in a story, and still, even if "puffing", make a valuable contribution. I doubt the editors of Brigit Williams Books would have published his book if he was bad or misinformed. I read it and it is good.
